The Huangpu River and the Bund are must visit attractions for anyone visiting Shanghai. The Huangpu River, which is a branch of China’s famous Yangtze River, snakes dragon like for approximately 114 kilometres. This picturesque ice free river divides the city’s eastern section from its western section. Along the border of the river, many of Shanghai’s attractions are located, of which the Bund is one of the most popular.
Beginning from the Yangtze River and flowing into the East China Sea, the Huangpu River is ideal for enjoying a relaxing and scenic cruise. The shorter cruises are mainly centred on exploring the waterfront area between the Yangpu and Nangpu bridges. The longer cruises take visitors on a picturesque journey for over 60 kilometres down the path of the golden waterway. On the eastern front of the river lies the contemporary Pudong area which is home to western styled architectural buildings. This stands in complete contrast to the western section of the Huangpu River that is home to the Bund with its classic architectural patterns.
The Bund, also known as the Zhongshan Dongyi Road, is renowned for being one of the top attractions to visit in Shanghai. Streams of locals and tourists visit the area as it epitomizes the rich history of Shanghai and is reputed to be a place where classic architectural styles of the world can be seen. There are over 50 buildings displaying architectural patterns such as Gothic, Renaissance, Romanesque and Baroque design. The beautiful sights of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the Jin Mao Tower can be spotted against the pretty Shanghai sky when strolling along the Bund. Other attractions to see at the Bund include the Cenotaph, the Great Mural Carving, the Marshall Chen Yi statue and the riverside greenbelt.
