Kyoto is an urban district which was once the imperial capital city of Japan and now plays a major role as a focal metropolitan area.
Its religious monuments are diverse and are constructed according to authentic Japanese architecture. The Byodo-In Buddhist temple, located in the Kyoto Prefecture reflects the Tendai and Jodo Shu sects. Originally believed to be built during the Heian period in 998 as a villa, it was later transformed into a temple, with Phoenix Hall which was completed in 1053 being its most popular attraction. Today, this is the only branch that still remains from the original complex that was damaged during the 1336 civil war.
The main chamber of the temple houses an image of Amida Buddha, which is mounted on a high platform. The sculpture was created using Japanese cypress and is approximately three metres in height. Other types of art and sculpture can also be seen on the walls of the temple halls.
