The elegant Pridi Banomyong Institute with its handsome tree-lined complex of buildings is dedicated to the memory of the eminent historical figure that played a key role in creating the Kingdom of Thailand as it exists today.
Pridi Banomyong is regarded as the father of democracy in Thailand, a charismatic and brilliant leader who was instrumental in laying the foundations for the nation’s modern constitutionally based government. He played a crucial role as one of the significant protagonists of the 1932 coup which replaced Thailand’s absolute monarchy with a constitutional monarchy. The military authorities under Phibun Songkhram and Pridi Banomyong’s Freedom Party were to remain allies until the commencement of World War II. Pridi was also responsible for writing Thailand’s first constitution.
The institute functions as an establishment which promotes Thai culture and arts, hosting regular stage performances presented by aspirant Thai artistes and monthly artistic films, in addition to cultural workshops and seminars. The institute also serves as an academic institution and an art gallery for local Thai artists as well as international art. The visitor will proceed through a wooden walkway to the open air courtyard located at the rear of the compound; here two art exhibits with the creations of various artists may be seen. The focus of interest at the institute is Pridi Banomyong Day on May 11th when special films and lectures are held.
