Imagine an adventure journeying deep into the heart of a mountain range with the wind blowing freely in your hair and nothing but mile upon mile of track ahead, leading you past new and exciting landscapes. If this sounds like your perfect idea of a holiday excursion, then a ride on Puffing Billy is definitely for you!
One of the best things to do around Melbourne with the entire family is to hop aboard Puffing Billy, one of the world’s best preserved steam trains. The starting point at Belgrave Station is around 40 kilometres from Melbourne and can be reached by car or via the city’s Belgrave Train line. It is advised to arrive 30 minutes prior to the train’s departure times on weekdays and 45 minutes prior if it is the weekend or a holiday.
Starting from Belgrave, the century old Puffing Billy, “puffs” its way along the original mountain track to its destination in Gembrook, taking passengers on an unforgettable ride through the Dandenong Ranges. As the train slowly chugs out of the station, sit by its large semi open sides where you can dangle your feet out in safety and enjoy the view!
Along the way, you will pass by many sights of interest; Sherbrooke Forest, Monbulk Creek, Trestle Bridge, Menzies Creek and Emerald Lake to name a few. Amidst these sites, you will come across some truly amazing views of the surrounding countryside, with the rhythmic sound of a steam engine, your constant companion on this incredible journey.
