An amazing sight to see, the Vimanmek Palace is the world’s largest golden teak mansion ever built. The mansion was built in 1900 under the instruction of King Rama V. Inspired by his tour to Europe in 1897, King Rama V bought land to create a royal garden, which is now called Dusit Gardens. The first permanent home that was ever placed and used in Dusit Gardens was the Vimanmek Palace, which was originally placed elsewhere, but was dismantled and placed in the garden.
One of the most unique and intriguing features of traditional Thai houses is that they do not use nails in the construction of a house. Hence, the mansion was built without the use of nails. The Vimanmek Palace comprises of 81 rooms and two wings that are in the shape of the letter ‘L’. After the death of King Rama V in 1910, the royal family moved to the Grand Palace.
It is best to take a guided tour through the palace. The rooms are divided into five sections; one area of particular interest is the inner court where in the heyday of the palace only women and males under the age of 18 were allowed in, with the exception of the king. The trophy room is proof of the king being an avid hunter. Here, visitors can see ancient weaponry and trophies on display. Not all of the rooms are open to the public, but those on view are well worth a visit.
The Vimanmek Palace has been restored to its former glory and a visit is akin to taking a trip through time. Along with roaming through the many rooms of the palace, visitors will notice bewitching antique furniture, intricate porcelain, royal carriages, bed chambers, ancient art, photographs and so much more.
The palace is a wonderful tribute to artisans of that earlier era, and a remarkable piece of architecture that will leave you in absolute amazement. Visit the many cultural and ancient attractions the city has to offer, and gain an appreciation for the local culture.
