Shadowed by Mount Wellington and situated along the scenic Derwent River, Tasmania’s quaint capital city is the gateway to Antarctic expeditions and a buzzing port town welcoming more than 1 million annual visitors. From heart-pumping outdoor pursuits to fascinating historical sites and a thriving food scene, there’s plenty of reason to linger in this city for all seasons.

The Central Business District and waterfront are the heart of laid-back Hobart. Packed with funky boutiques, cute cafés, and handsome colonial structures, these walkable areas are pleasant places to stroll and snack, while on Saturdays famous Salamanca Market is the place to be for locals and tourists alike. Lively bars pour locally brewed beers and wines produced in the nearby valleys; there’s even an award-winning Tasmanian whiskey distillery here.

That’s just downtown: Beaches, mountain trails, caves, and national parks are all within day trip distance of Hobart, too.

Getting Around

Australia’s second-oldest city has limited public transportation, but given its relatively small size visitors will have no trouble navigating their way around town. The Central Business District and surrounding areas are easily walkable, while taxis and a reliable, well-connected fleet of Metro buses are convenient and affordable.

Hobart International Airport is located just under 20 kilometres outside of central Hobart in Cambridge. Redline offers shuttle bus service to/from the airport for AU$18 or US$12 (one-way), or AU$32 or US$21.30 (round-trip). Buses depart after every flight and make stops at both Somerset serviced residences.

Metered taxis are available outside the arrival terminal, as well. Fares average AU$40 to AU$45 (US$26.70 to $30), including an airport fee. It’ll take around 30 minutes by bus or taxi to reach the city centre.

By Buses

Aside from metered taxis, buses operated by Metro Tasmania are the only other means of public transportation in Hobart. Most routes originate in central Hobart, around Franklin Square or Elizabeth Street, and there are stops at or near many of the city’s top attractions, including the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Mount Wellington, and Seven Mile Beach.

Fares vary based on the number of “sections” included in the journey, as well as whether you’re travelling within or beyond urban areas. Minimum urban fares are AUD$3.20 (up to four sections), while maximum fares are $6.70. Purchase a ticket directly from the driver in cash.

Day passes for unlimited bus travel are no longer available.

By Taxi

Taxis are a quick and easy way to get around Hobart. You can hail drivers from the street, wait at a designated taxi stand, or call any of the city’s private operators directly to book in advance or to request immediate pick-up.

All taxis operate on a metered fare that starts at AUD$3.60, then increases $1.94 every kilometre ($2.32 between 8pm and 6am). Passengers are responsible for covering tolls and other fees incurred during the ride; an airport fee, for example, is applicable for journeys beginning at Hobart International Airport. Most operators accept credit cards, but 10% surcharge fees apply.

Tipping is not expected, but consider leaving modest $2 - $5 tips for good service.

By Walking

One of the best ways to explore Tasmania’s compact capital city is by your own two feet. Somerset on Salamanca Hobart and Somerset on the Pier Hobart are both conveniently located within close walking distance of the city’s vibrant downtown area and Central Business District, offering easy access to bars, restaurants, markets, art galleries, and more.
